Services
Students, faculty, and staff may borrow certain non-reference materials to enhance their academic, professional, and personal pursuits. The borrowing of materials is subject to the policy defined below.
1. Borrowing Privileges
Borrowing privileges are granted to students, faculty, and staff who are in possession of valid AUK ID cards, in addition to external users with a valid library membership. Borrowing privileges vary according to user and material type. If the due date falls on a day when the library is closed, the loan period will be extended until the next day the library is open.
Individuals are accountable for items borrowed on one’s ID. Library users should not lend their ID card or borrow items from other persons.

Non-circulating Materials
The following materials circulate only inside the library:
- Reference collection items
- Journals
- Newspapers
- Reserve collection
Only faculty can check out journals (1 title for 24 hours) manually through the library staff.
Reserve Items
Reserve collection includes all course books and materials that faculty members place on reserve for a specific course. Reserve materials cannot be checked out and they can be used only inside the library with a time limit of two hours. However, a student has to submit his/her ID card to the library staff for reserved items.
2. Renewals
The borrower is responsible for renewing his or her materials before the due date. All items are subject to recall 14 days after their first checkout date, and/or any time that the item has been reserved, or when requested by other borrowers. Items can be renewed one time by one of these ways:
- In person through the self-check machine located on the ground floor.
- By telephone: 1-802040 Ext. 3061/3065
- By email: Library@auk.edu.kw
- Online through the library user account
3. Overdue Materials
Four overdue notices will be sent to the borrower’s email:
- Pre-overdue notice: 3 days prior to the due date
- First overdue notice: 1 day after the due date
- Second overdue notice: After 7 days (grace period)
- Final notice will be sent 14 days after the due date.
If the item has not been returned within the grace period, fines will start to accumulate from the first day past the due date. If the item has not been returned, borrowing privileges will be revoked until the overdue items have been returned.
Failure to receive an overdue notice does not exempt a borrower from the fine. Borrowers are responsible for knowing and observing the due date and should not be dependent upon library notices.
4. Lost or damaged items
Lost items should be reported promptly. If the library considers the item lost or damaged, the borrower will be charged the cost of that item in addition to a KD10 processing fee.
An exact copy of a lost or damaged item that is in new condition can be accepted as a replacement, along with a 5KD processing fee.
5. Fines
The fine for overdue materials is set at 0.250fils per day to a maximum of KD5 per item. For any unpaid fines, the borrower will receive one fine notice after the item is returned. If the fines are not paid, fines will be added to the borrower's AUK fees (in the case of students) or deducted from the borrower's salary (in the case of faculty and staff) and from the paid deposit for library members. If a student has unpaid fines, he or she will not be able to register for classes until the fines have been paid.
Information Literacy is the set of skills needed to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information.
The American Library Association's (ALA) Presidential Committee on Information Literacy, Final Report states that, "To be information literate, a person must be able to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information" (1989).
What We Do
Information literacy programs, Library instruction, guided tours and in-class orientations are offered at various times throughout the academic year, generally upon the request of a faculty member. The Reference/Instruction Librarians at AUK Library work to develop handouts, research guides and other materials that support learning.
To request an instruction session, please submit the Library Instruction Request Form or contact a Reference/Instruction Librarian. One-on-one sessions can be arranged upon request.
AUK Library Tutorials
Self-service printing, copying, and scanning are available in both floors of the library. Each student is entitled to a free photocopying balance of 250 pages per fall and spring, and 100 pages for the summer course. Photocopiers can be used to scan documents to a USB drive or as an email attachment. In order to start using the service, students need to stop by the library office or send an email to library@auk.edu.kw to get their pin code.
Steps for Students
- Click here to generate your pin code, and login using AUK credentials.
- Your account will be loaded with 250 free copies for each of the fall and spring semesters, and 100 free copies for the summer semester.
- To get your printout, enter your code in any of the printing/photocopying machines in the library.
- You can use the same code for photocopying or scanning.
Important Notes about Photocopying
- If you ran out of free balance, you can purchase additional balance and refill your account at the Finance Department.
- When the code expires or gets lost, you can generate another one using the same URL.
Unused balance will not be carried over to the following semesters. It will be reset to "0" by the end of every semester, and then reloaded with the new allowance. - Paper jams do not affect your account - Check your balance
- You tried to photocopy and you got a bad/ruined copy
-
- Take the bad/ruined copy to the librarian
- The responsible librarian will handle the approval of refunds upon submission of proof of a bad copy
- Fill out and sign a refund form

Off-campus access to library resources requires a valid AUK username and password. Our license agreements for almost all electronic resources restrict off-campus access to current AUK faculty, staff, students, and approved affiliates only. To obtain access, go to the library page to use the resources and you will be prompted to login once you attempt to access subscribed content.
Course Reserves: The Library places all textbooks on reserve. If you’d like to place additional materials on reserve, please contact the Library Administrative Assistant.
Materials Requests: For book and multimedia orders, kindly submit the Materials Purchase Request form, or contact the Collection Development Librarian.
Document Supply: Library staff will obtain journal articles which are required by faculty members but are not held within the library’s collections. For article requests, please email a Reference Librarian or use the Materials Purchase Request form.
Instruction Services: Librarians provide library sessions customized for your course. To request an instruction session, submit the Library Instruction Request Form.
Syllabus Services: Librarians assist faculty and instructors with the creation of an electronic reading list for the syllabus/Moodle to make extended readings and other course materials available to students.
Instructors are encouraged to send their syllabi or course readings lists to Reference Librarians who will work to locate library resources such as articles, media, e-books, and make them easily available to students.
Consider the following when creating your syllabus or Moodle course:
- Link to library resources and readings (journal articles, e-books, online videos, etc.) in your course Moodle page for easy access for all students.
- Link to the relevant subject guide. Students will find comprehensive resources related to the course subject.
- Include a statement about the library in the course syllabi
