Researchers and Interns

Geoff Martin

Geoff Martin is a PhD Candidate at the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. His research interests focus on looking at collective action processes that lead to social movements, alterations of identity that transform contentious political action, the impact of oil wealth on civil society dynamics, and the effect of state-led capitalism and/or neoliberal policy shifts in the developing world. During his M.A. in Political Science, Geoff conducted several field research trips to Kuwait and wrote his thesis on the use of Twitter in mobilization politics in Kuwait. For his dissertation, he will be focusing on the changing capacities of civil society organizations from a historical perspective focusing on several countries in the Middle East and North Africa, including Kuwait. He is currently working on an edited book chapter on the methodological constraints of understanding the causal impact of social media activism on offline events.
